Program Overview

MASTER OF ARTS IN LIBERAL STUDIES

The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) program offers students the opportunity to shape their curriculum to pursue their passions.

Customizing Your Curriculum

One of the key features of the MALS program is the ability to customize the curriculum. There are several ways to do this:

  1. Plan semesters ahead: Look ahead to create a strategic path by reviewing future semester courses.
  2. Concurrently earn a certificate: MALS has special arrangements with five University of Delaware graduate certificate programs, including:
  • Graduate Certificate in Africana Studies
  • Graduate Certificate in Community Engagement
  • Graduate Certificate in Historic Preservation
  • Museum Studies Certificate
  • Women and Gender Studies Certificate These certificates can help focus MALS studies and provide a credential in a specific subject.
  1. Explore outside the MALS courses: Students have the opportunity to take at least two courses (six credits) outside the program. More courses can be taken by submitting a brief proposal to the Faculty Advisory Committee.
  2. Consider a "special problems course": If a graduate course is not available in a particular subject, a "special problems" course (independent study) can be arranged with a faculty member.
  3. 400-level courses are possibilities: Occasionally, 400-level courses can be taken with additional or enhanced assignments to bring the work to the graduate level.
  4. Target your papers: Students can choose topics connected to their academic interests in almost every MALS class.
  5. Think about your focus early: Developing a focus early in the program allows for more opportunity to customize the program.

The MALS director serves as the advisor until a faculty member in the student's area of interest is assigned. The director is available to help explore ideas and think through strategy throughout the program.
