Program Overview

Master's Programme in Chemistry

The Master's Programme in Chemistry at the University of Gothenburg is a 2-year, 120-credit program that provides students with a deep and up-to-date understanding of chemistry. The program is offered by the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology at the Faculty of Science and Technology.

Programme Structure and Content

The program consists of both mandatory and elective courses, allowing students to deepen their knowledge in their field or broaden their knowledge by adding other natural science subjects to their curriculum. During the first academic year, students take courses corresponding to 60 higher education credits. In the second academic year, students perform an individual degree project of 30, 45, or 60 higher education credits in one of the research groups, with the opportunity to specialize in areas such as:

  • Analytical chemistry
  • Atmospheric science
  • Biochemistry and structural biology
  • Inorganic chemistry
  • Organic chemistry
  • Physical chemistry

Teaching

The program emphasizes close contact with teachers and researchers, teaching in small groups, and using problem-based learning methods. Students develop their critical and analytical thinking through project work and their communication skills through oral and written presentations of scientific material.

Why Study Chemistry at the University of Gothenburg?

The University of Gothenburg offers a unique research environment in Sweden, covering a wide spectrum of chemistry and molecular biology. The program provides students with the opportunity to create a unique scientific profile, tailored to their interests and future goals.

Prerequisites and Selection

To be eligible for the program, applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in Science with a minimum of 90 credits in chemistry, or equivalent qualifications. Applicants must also prove their knowledge of English, with a minimum level of English 6/English B from Swedish Upper Secondary School or an internationally recognized test such as TOEFL or IELTS. Selection is based on the number of credits from previous university studies, with a maximum of 165 credits.

After Graduation

Graduates receive the degree Master of Science in Chemistry and are prepared for a career in the private or public sector or for further doctoral studies. Alumni have gone on to work in various roles, including:

  • Analytical, environmental, hospital, and manufacturing chemists
  • Laboratory, quality, research, and technology engineers
  • Global product safety, process technology, and product specialists
  • Analytical and senior scientists
  • Quality and RD&I (Research, Development & Innovation) managers
  • Laboratory assistants
  • Professors and lecturers

Alumni have been employed by companies such as:

  • AstraZeneca
  • Carlsberg Group
  • IVL Environmental Research Institute
  • LabRobot Products AB
  • Nouryon
  • RISE Institute of Sweden AB
  • Saybolt Sweden AB
  • Swedish Agency of Marine and Water Management
  • Syntagon
  • Q&Q Labs AB

Facilities

Most courses within the program are given on Campus Medicinareberget, which provides a unique research environment in Sweden, covering a wide spectrum of chemistry and molecular biology.

Tuition Fees

The full education cost for the program is 284,040 SEK for the 2025 intake and 290,000 SEK for the 2026 intake. The first payment is 71,010 SEK for the 2025 intake and 72,500 SEK for the 2026 intake.
