Program Overview
Mathematical Sciences, Master's Programme
The Master's programme in Mathematical Sciences is a 2-year, 120-credit programme offered by the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the Faculty of Science and Technology. The programme is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in mathematical sciences, with a focus on applied and pure mathematics.
Programme Structure
The programme offers a high degree of freedom and flexibility, allowing students to build their own specialization from a wide range of advanced courses. Only one course is mandatory for all specializations, and there are two exclusive courses for students in the programme that are based on solving real-world problems from industrial partners.
Specializations
The programme offers five specializations:
- Mathematics
- Applied Mathematics
- Mathematical Statistics
- Financial Mathematics
- Statistical Learning and AI
Some specializations are more theoretical and research-oriented, while others are geared towards applied mathematics and better prepare students for work in the private sector.
Who Should Apply?
The programme is suitable for students with a solid background and genuine interest in mathematics who want to prepare for a career in research and development inside or outside academia.
Prerequisites and Selection
Entry Requirements
A Bachelor's degree containing at least 75 credits in mathematics and mathematical statistics, of which at least 15 credits must be at an advanced level. Applicants must also prove their knowledge of English.
Selection
The selection is based on an overall qualitative assessment of the applicants' previous education and relevant work experience.
After Graduation
The programme will prepare students well for a career as a mathematician or statistician in industry, or for further studies towards a PhD. Mathematicians and statisticians work in diverse areas of research and development, including:
- Drug development
- Mobile communication
- Automotive and aerospace engineering
- Encryption methods
- Image processing and analysis
- Computer graphics
- Deep learning systems
- Pricing of options
- Insurance risk assessment
Facilities
The Department of Mathematical Sciences is a joint department of Chalmers/University of Gothenburg, located near the centre of Gothenburg in the Chalmers area, Campus Johanneberg. The facilities include spacious and bright lecture halls, group rooms, a reading room, and several computer rooms.
Tuition Fees
The full education cost for the programme is 284,040 SEK for the 2025 intake and 290,000 SEK for the 2026 intake. However, no fees are charged for EU and EEA citizens, Swedish residence permit holders, and exchange students.
Application Period
The application period for the 2025 intake was from October 15, 2024, to January 15, 2025, and from March 17, 2025, to April 15, 2025. The application period for the 2026 intake is from October 16, 2025, to January 15, 2026, and from March 16, 2026, to April 15, 2026.
Programme Coordinators
The programme coordinators are:
- Sonja Göc, Study Counsellor
