Program Overview
Master of Fine Arts Programme in Film
The Master of Fine Arts Programme in Film is a 2-year, 120-credit program offered by the HDK-Valand - Academy of Art and Design at the University of Gothenburg. The program is designed to prepare students for an independent and inquiry-led film practice, encouraging critical engagement with the world and a socially and politically conscious approach to the medium.
Programme Structure and Content
The program introduces students to a wide range of theoretical, artistic, and filmic propositions, exploring and experimenting with these concepts through practical exercises and discussions. The first two semesters focus on expanding students' understanding of film practices, while the third semester involves planning, developing, and making an inquiry-led film for public screening. The final semester focuses on critical reflections, dissemination, and communication of completed audiovisual works in public contexts.
Who Should Apply?
The program is suitable for applicants with a strong interest in social, political, and cultural contexts, and a genuine curiosity for inquiry-led film education. Applicants should demonstrate high technical competency in image-making and a foundational understanding of film language. Prior experience in film is not necessary, but a diverse educational background is valued.
Prerequisites and Selection
Entry requirements include a Bachelor's degree in film of at least 180 credits or equivalent, and proof of English proficiency (English 6/English B from Swedish Upper Secondary School or equivalent). The selection process is based on an assessment of submitted work samples and a personal interview.
After Graduation
Graduates of the program receive a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film and pursue diverse careers, including professional careers in the industry, research, and teaching. Many alumni work as independent filmmakers, and some have secured funding to further develop their master's projects.
Facilities
Students have access to professional-grade resources, including cinema spaces, black box theaters, digital cameras, lights, sound equipment, editing suites, grading and sound mixing rooms, and workshop spaces. Project spaces, well-equipped workshops, and student-run galleries are also available.
Tuition Fees
The full education cost is 1,250,000 SEK, with the first payment being 312,500 SEK. No fees are charged for EU and EEA citizens, Swedish residence permit holders, and exchange students.
Programme Coordinator
The program coordinator is Ram Krishna Ranjan, a lecturer at the University of Gothenburg.
Study Counselling
Digital drop-in sessions are available on Mondays from 13:00-14:00 (CET) for study counselling.
Technical and Production-Related Support
The program provides technical and production-related support, including in-house and guest-led sessions on various aspects of filmmaking, covering pre-production, production, and post-production.
Extensive Network and Collaborations
The program benefits from an integrated environment that fosters interdisciplinary dialogues, including partnerships with L'Internationale Online, the Centre for Art and Political Imaginary, and the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF. Students participate in the CPH-Dox Academy in their first year and engage with the Gothenburg Film Festival in their second year. Mobility opportunities and affiliations with GEECT and KONSTFORSK enrich students' interdisciplinary experiences.
