The Programme in Midwifery Science consists of three semesters of full-time studies, conducted entirely in Swedish. This program is designed for individuals who wish to pursue a career as a midwife, providing support and security during childbirth and promoting women's health throughout their lives.

Local Profile

The Sahlgrenska Academy's midwifery science program has a distinct local profile, emphasizing childbirth as a natural process with minimal interventions. The program focuses on the supportive role of the midwife, requiring an in-depth understanding of childbirth from a family and lifetime perspective. Midwives must also be able to consider how attitudes and values affect the care provided and support the development of parents-to-be and new parents.

The program extends over 1.5 years, comprising 90 higher education credits and including nine courses:

  • Professional theory and method
  • Women's sexual and reproductive health
  • Normal childbirth
  • Degree project in reproductive and perinatal health
  • Delivery skills 1 and 2
  • Women's and family health 1 and 2
  • Professional approach and complicated childbirth Half of the program consists of on-site training located in Gothenburg and other cities in V‰stra Gˆtaland.

The Degree

The Programme in Midwifery Science leads to a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery. Upon completion, students can apply for a license as a midwife with the National Board of Health and Welfare. The program also provides a basis for completing a one-year master's degree, with continued studies offered to achieve a full two-year master's degree in the main field of study. A few places in the program are reserved for achieving a full two-year master's degree.

The program has been internationally adapted, preparing students for work in international and multicultural contexts. It is possible to complete parts of the program at one of the universities or university colleges worldwide with which the Sahlgrenska Academy has a partnership arrangement.
