Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 3: Applied Analysis (PIL103)

The overall aim of the course is to write an independent paper about a theme within teaching and learning in higher education. The participants should investigate and expand on an idea or a problem based on research and proven experience. This theme is discussed, interrogated, and analyzed continuously throughout the course. Many choose to carry out educational development work where they critically reflect on their own data.

Course Details

• The course is an online course.
• In addition to the final text seminar, the course participants meet continuously online.
• The content consists of topics that are relevant to the independent paper.
• The participants' papers are discussed in groups.
• The collegial conversation and the exchange of experience have a central role and the independent paper is the only assessable component.

Eligibility

• This course is open only to those who are employed or have a teaching assignment at the University of Gothenburg, are accepted to or are completing their doctoral studies at GU, or are otherwise affiliated with the university.

Scope

• The course comprises the equivalent of 3.5 weeks of full-time studies.

• The syllabus for PIL103 is available in pdf format.
• The current reading list will be available on the web page no later than eight weeks before the course starts.

Admission Principle

• We apply the admission principle "first come, first served", based on the time and date when a complete application is submitted.

Course of Studies

• We recommend you to take PIL101 before PIL102.
• To get admittance to PIL103, you must have passed both PIL101 (or HPE101) and PIL102 (or HPE102), or have qualifications assessed as equal by a faculty at the University of Gothenburg.

Prerequisites

• You must have a Degree of Bachelor or equivalent.
• You must have passed the course Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 1: Basic Course (HPE101 or PIL101) or have qualifications assessed as equal.
• You must have passed the course Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 2: Subject Field Pedagogy (HPE102 or PIL102) or have qualifications assessed as equal.

About Course Certificates

• PIL103 is a certification course.
• All course meetings and assignments are mandatory and require attendance.
• In some cases, it will be possible to submit a supplementary assignment that corresponds to the meeting or assignment missed.
• To be approved for a certificate, you must also achieve the learning objectives in the course syllabus.

Information for Doctoral Students

• Have you taken PIL103 as a compulsory course in your doctoral studies? When you have received your certificate of a completed and approved course, you should hand the certificate to the person who is the administrator (or equivalent) for your doctoral studies.
• That person registers the course as approved in Ladok for doctoral studies.

• The three courses (PIL101, PIL102, and PIL103) each comprise the equivalent of 3.5 weeks of full-time studies.
• The courses have been designed to suit the teaching staff at the University of Gothenburg.
• The overall aim is to provide increased understanding and knowing of teaching and learning in higher education concerning the elaboration of objectives, the planning of tuition, and examining and assessing the students' learning.

Progression

• We recommend you to take PIL101 before PIL102, although this is not obligatory.
• However, you must have passed both PIL101 (or HPE101) and PIL102 (or HPE102), or have qualifications assessed as equal by a faculty at the University of Gothenburg, to get admittance to PIL103.
