Program Overview
Computer Engineering Program
The Computer Engineering program at DTU focuses on designing, developing, and implementing intelligent functions in various devices and systems. As a student in this program, you will learn to use programming languages and development tools, and gain knowledge of different hardware platforms and components, as well as data communication.
What You Will Learn
In this program, you will learn to:
- Use common programming languages and development tools
- Understand different hardware platforms and components
- Learn about data communication
- Evaluate how hardware and software work together
- Develop software systems
Program Structure
The program consists of three and a half years of study, with the first two years comprising compulsory courses that provide a solid foundation in both hardware platforms and programming. Later, you can specialize in the area that interests you the most.
First Year
In the first year, you will take courses in mathematics and computer science, with a focus on programming. The first semester course "Introduction to Embedded Systems" introduces you to the construction of embedded systems, while the second semester course "Digital Systems" focuses on microcontrollers, their operation, and programming.
Second Year
The second year consists of compulsory courses in software development and methods that connect hardware to form embedded systems. You will learn the fundamental and broad expertise that ensures you can understand future technologies throughout your working life.
Fifth Semester - Study Abroad
The fifth semester is your study abroad semester, where you will experience a part of the world and strengthen your professional profile. You can make the journey manageable by using one of DTU's exchange agreements, which you can find on DTU Beyond Borders.
Practicum
In the sixth semester, you will participate in a practicum in a private or public company relevant to IT electronics. You also have the opportunity to take a practicum abroad.
Final Year and Diploma Project
The final year of study consists of some elective courses and a final diploma project. Here, you can choose to specialize in a specific field through elective courses and the diploma project.
Diploma Project
In the final diploma project, you will work in depth with a professional topic and demonstrate your ability to act as an engineer in connection with the completion of a larger task. The project must be based on an engineering and practice-oriented problem statement. As a rule, the diploma project is prepared in collaboration with a company - often the company where you have been an intern. You can also complete the diploma project abroad.
Career Opportunities
With a diploma degree in Computer Engineering, you can typically be employed in a company that develops intelligent products within electronics, or in media and software companies. You can also be employed in a company that develops intelligent products. Your job title may be system developer, technical consultant, or IT consultant. Typical employers of computer engineers include the electronics industry, media companies, consulting companies, and telecommunications companies, but also companies whose product is not directly related to intelligent systems, such as food production, offshore, transport, and manufacturing companies in general.
Further Studies
A diploma degree in Computer Engineering is a self-contained, completed degree. As a graduated diploma engineer, you can go directly out and work as an engineer. If you instead want to continue your studies, it is possible to study further on the master's program and become a master of science in engineering (cand.polyt.). However, this requires that you meet the academic requirements necessary to be admitted to the master's program you want to study. Some of these courses may need to be taken through supplementary courses after you have completed your diploma degree.
