Advanced Building Information Modeling (BIM)

The Advanced Building Information Modeling (BIM) course enables students to develop skills in OpenBIM, specifically tailored to their needs. The course focuses on OpenBIM data and standards, with three main principles:


  • Thinking in 'IFC, FAIR data, and open standards'
  • Supporting the circularity of data, knowledge, processes, models, and tools
  • Building (architect) OpenBIM tools for specific use cases, applying domain expertise

Learning Objectives

  • Create and manage a BIM execution plan based on the OpenBIM standard ISO 19650
  • Identify, locate, and extract information from an IFC model in OpenBIM tools
  • Apply appropriate OpenBIM standards and guidelines to support open and FAIR data, tools, and processes
  • Provide professional disciplinary guidance based on OpenBIM analysis
  • Apply domain-specific linked data ontologies
  • Create, branch, and collaborate on the development of an OpenBIM tool in Python with peers in a code repository
  • Identify BIM challenges by analyzing OpenBIM data
  • Communicate an advanced BIM concept learned in the course to fellow students and reflect on peer feedback
  • Identify and model a BIM case study based on BIM challenges identified from the analysis of an OpenBIM project in BPMN
  • Identify a suitable development methodology for an OpenBIM tool or model for different use cases
  • Apply and improve programming skills in Python to develop an OpenBIM tool or modeling skills in OpenBIM using engineering domain expertise
  • Evaluate the suitability and implications of software licenses for the OpenBIM tool being developed or the modeling tool being used

Course Content

The Advanced Building Information Modeling (BIM) course provides the opportunity to develop skills in OpenBIM, specifically tailored to the student's needs. The course is divided into four parts:


  1. Learn from BIM: A core concept in the course is navigating and understanding the IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) interoperable data model in the AEC industry. Extracting data from the IFC format and writing rules to control the data in IFC using Python and IfcOpenShell.
  2. OpenBIM Modeler or OpenBIM Analysis Tool Developer: Building an OpenBIM tool or workflow.
  3. OpenBIM Manager or OpenBIM Ontologist: Ontologies and linked building data.
  4. OpenBIM Guru

Recommended Prerequisites

  • 11031/41927, 41927, or equivalent
  • It is also recommended to have programming skills in Python
