Introduction to the Pharmacy PGY2 Infectious Diseases Residency Program

The Division of Pharmacy at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center offers a PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in Infectious Diseases. This program is designed to provide a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient experience in immunocompromised and general infectious diseases.

Program Overview

The residency program allows for tailored instruction for the individual resident based on their interests, past experience, and future goals. The PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in Infectious Diseases will develop infectious diseases pharmacy clinicians with expert knowledge and skills in both clinical infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship.

Program Goals and Objectives

The goal of the PGY2 Infectious Diseases residency program is to provide the resident with the opportunity to develop comprehensive clinical skills for independent practice as an Infectious Diseases Clinical Pharmacy Specialist. Residents completing the program will be competent and confident in both the management of patients with infectious diseases and the implementation of antimicrobial stewardship.

Required Experiences

The resident will participate in the following required experiences:

• Leukemia ID Consult
• Stem Cell Transplant (SCT) ID Consult
• Lymphoma/Myeloma ID Consult
• Hospital Medicine ID Consult
• Infectious Diseases Clinic
• Antimicrobial Stewardship
• Clinical Microbiology

Elective Learning Experiences

The resident is required to successfully complete two one-month elective experiences. Examples of previously completed elective learning experiences include:

• Solid Tumor Infectious Diseases Consult (MD Anderson Cancer Center)
• Pediatric Infectious Diseases (Texas Children's Hospital)
• Solid Organ Transplant Infectious Diseases (Houston Methodist Hospital)
• Solid Organ Transplant Infectious Diseases (Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center)

Longitudinal Learning Experiences

The resident will participate in the following longitudinal learning experiences:

• Infectious Diseases Clinic (11 months)
• Antimicrobial Stewardship Administration (11 months)
• Drug Information (12 months)
• Research/Quality Improvement (QI) Project (11 months)

Presentations and Committee Involvement

The resident is responsible for completing various presentations, including case conferences, journal club, and journal scan. The resident will also serve as a member of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee.

Precepting and Mentorship

The resident will participate in precepting opportunities for students from the University of Texas College of Pharmacy and the University of Houston College of Pharmacy.

Weekend and Holiday Coverage

The resident will work approximately 12 to 15 weekends throughout the year, potentially including one to two institutionally recognized holidays.

Evaluation and Assessment

The resident's performance will be evaluated based on their completion of required experiences, presentations, and committee involvement. The resident will also evaluate each preceptor and learning experience upon completion.

Support and Benefits

The resident will receive a stipend of $65,000 and a liberal benefit program, including comprehensive health insurance. The resident will also have access to educational resources, including a medical library and online access to the Texas Medical Center library.
