Introduction to the PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency Program

The Division of Pharmacy at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center offers an ASHP accredited one-year PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency Program. The program aims to provide residents with a broad-based exposure and experience with malignant hematology, oncology, and stem cell transplant patient populations.

Program Overview

The residency program is designed to develop the resident's clinical skills and prepare them to provide clinical pharmacy services in both acute and ambulatory care settings. The program consists of core learning experiences and additional requirements, allowing for tailored instruction based on each resident's interests and career goals.

Qualifications and Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants must have a Pharm.D. degree from an accredited school of pharmacy and completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program. Texas Pharmacist licensure is required no later than October 1.

Program Structure

The program includes various learning experiences, such as:

• Inpatient-focused learning experiences (e.g., Adult Leukemia, Lymphoma/Myeloma, Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy)
• Outpatient-focused learning experiences (e.g., Breast Medical Oncology, Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology, Genitourinary Medical Oncology)
• Combination of inpatient and outpatient learning experiences (e.g., Melanoma Medical Oncology)
• Electives (2) options include Pediatric Oncology, Palliative care, Sarcoma, Investigational Cancer Therapeutics, Neuro-oncology, and others

Resident Responsibilities

Residents are required to participate in direct patient care activities, presentations, weekend coverage, research, and other projects as assigned. They must also complete documentation and evaluations for all activities, experiences, and objectives accomplished.

Presentations and Teaching Opportunities

Residents will provide Oncology Forum presentations, a program on cancer screening and prevention to the general public, and a Pharmacy Grand Rounds presentation. They will also participate in Shared Student Instruction, Shared Student Journal Club and Presentations, and may have opportunities for layered learning and teaching certificate programs.

Evaluation and Assessment

The program uses a competency-based evaluation system, with preceptor faculty providing weekly informal feedback and formal summative evaluations upon completion of each learning experience. Residents will also evaluate their preceptors and learning experiences.

Support and Benefits

The program offers a stipend of $65,000, 160 hours of leave for personal time off and conference attendance, 100 hours of sick leave, and comprehensive health insurance. Residents also have access to an office with dedicated computer and references, a medical library, and a medical graphics department.

Application Instructions

Applications must be submitted via the PhORCAS online application system by January 5, with a pre-screening interview required prior to application submission. The application must include a statement of intent, curriculum vitae, official transcript, and three reference forms completed in PhORCAS.
