Program Overview
Master of Science in Anatomical Science
The Master's of Science in Anatomical Sciences (MS-ANSC) degree at UAB is a four-semester, 18-month program designed to produce skilled teachers of anatomy.
Program Overview
Since 2005, a nationwide need for anatomy teachers at all instructional levels has persisted, making recruitment of qualified faculty who can teach anatomy exceedingly problematic. The UAB MS-ANSC program is leading the charge to rectify this deficit: Beginning the summer of 2019, UAB will begin offering quality instruction to individuals pursuing an advanced degree in gross anatomy. New students begin the curriculum in the summer semester, and finish four semesters later in the following summer. Applications are due March 1st, with admission decisions finalized by May 1st.
Curriculum
Students will take approximately 12 credit hours of pedagogy training, including scholarly research in teaching, and curriculum development courses. An additional approximately 22 credit hours are focused on the anatomical sciences (gross anatomy, histology, embryology, and neuroanatomy), with dissection, research, and teaching practicum opportunities.
Admission Requirements
- Letter of intent/personal statement (Why do you want to study anatomy?)
- Transcripts (3.5 undergrad GPA, or other graduate work demonstrating academic excellence)
- Interview required
Program Structure
The program is designed to be completed in four semesters, with students starting in the summer semester and finishing the following summer. The curriculum includes a combination of pedagogy training, anatomical sciences courses, and research and teaching practicum opportunities.
Research Areas
The program focuses on the anatomical sciences, including gross anatomy, histology, embryology, and neuroanatomy. Students will have opportunities to participate in research and teaching practicum experiences, allowing them to develop their skills and knowledge in these areas.
