Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship Program
Program Overview
Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship Program
The Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship Program is designed to provide subspecialty residents in gastroenterology with the background and experience to diagnose and manage patients with acute and chronic diseases of the digestive system. The program aims to develop clinical judgment and procedural skills, as well as medical knowledge, humanistic qualities, and professional attitudes and behaviors.
Program Overview
The program is a three-year fellowship that includes a core curriculum in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of inpatients and outpatients with pediatric gastrointestinal, hepatic, pancreatic, and nutritional disorders. The clinical procedural requirements are in alignment with the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition's minimum recommendations for achieving competence.
Curriculum
The curriculum includes:
- A core curriculum in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition
- Clinical procedural training in esophagogastroduodenoscopies, colonoscopies, liver biopsies, and other interventional procedures
- Formal didactic teaching and directed reading and discussion
- Mentoring and opportunities for clinical or laboratory-based research
Competencies
The program subscribes to the guidelines established by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and expects fellows to obtain competency in six core areas:
- Patient Care: Provide patient care that is patient- and family-centered, compassionate, equitable, appropriate, and effective.
- Medical Knowledge: Demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological, and social-behavioral sciences.
- Interpersonal Skills and Communication: Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective exchange of information and collaboration with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
- Practice-based Learning and Improvement: Demonstrate the ability to investigate and evaluate care of patients, appraise and assimilate scientific evidence, and continuously improve patient care.
- Professionalism: Demonstrate a commitment to professionalism and adherence to ethical principles.
- Systems-based Practice: Demonstrate awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of healthcare.
Clinical Curriculum
The clinical curriculum involves broadly based experience with a wide range of pediatric patients having gastrointestinal problems. Fellows have their own set of patients that they follow autonomously in their continuity clinic with attending supervision, allowing for improved continuity and patient ownership.
Research
Scholarly activity is a core requirement for fellowship programs according to the ACGME. Fellows are expected to engage in projects that develop and test hypotheses or involve substantive scholarly exploration and analysis. Resources are provided to facilitate fellow involvement in scholarly activity, including access to the Center for Clinical and Translational Science and the Pediatric Research Office.
Quality Improvement
The program prioritizes participation in quality improvement activities during fellowship. Each fellow will have the opportunity to contribute to a quality improvement project, and faculty members with experience and formal training in quality improvement serve as mentors and coaches.
Educational Activities
The program places a strong emphasis on the delivery of quality educational activities during all years of training. Fellows have protected time weekly to participate in various seminars designed to enhance their learning on all aspects of pediatric gastroenterology.
Wellness
The program considers the well-being of fellows and faculty a top priority. Measures have been put in place to promote physical, psychological, and emotional well-being, including institution-level wellness initiatives, department-level wellness events, and division-level wellness activities.
Our Team
The program is led by a program director and assistant program director, with a program coordinator providing administrative support.
