Radiation Oncology Residency Program
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) offers a comprehensive Radiation Oncology Residency Program. The program is designed to provide residents with a collaborative, multidisciplinary training environment to educate the country's finest radiation oncologists.
Program Overview
While training at the comprehensive cancer center, residents learn from expert colleagues in surgical oncology, medical oncology, pathology, radiology, and genetics. During protected research time, residents have the opportunity to participate in scholarly clinical and laboratory research under the mentorship of national leaders in radiation oncology.
Program Details
Throughout the four-year training program, residents work one-on-one with faculty to become experts in modern radiotherapy techniques, including:
- Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
- Radiosurgery
- Adaptive radiotherapy
- Image-guided radiotherapy
- Brachytherapy
- Special procedures such as total body irradiation and total skin electron beam therapy
Mission
The mission of the program is to:
- Train residents to provide superior clinical care by diagnosing and treating common and rare cancers
- Prepare trainees for any future practice environment, including academic positions or private practice
- Foster an atmosphere of learning that promotes critical thinking and discussion by providing a collegial, multidisciplinary environment
- Involve residents in the collaborative environment of the NCI-designated O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB and its mission of advancing the science of oncology
