Program Overview

Course Overview

The course AG1152, Safety in the making, is a 7.5 credit course that explores the ways in which individuals' age, gender, ethnic background, and identity interact with each other to create barriers and obstacles to safety. The course critically examines theories about crime and environments to build knowledge that leads to more informed actions for planning safe and sustainable environments.

Course Description

A safe environment enables one of the most fundamental individual needs – the need of an individual to feel safe. The fear and risk of becoming a crime victim is a threat against such a basic human right. This course looks at the ways in which individuals' characteristics interact with each other to create barriers and obstacles to safety. Certain individuals and groups in society are more vulnerable to crime than others, and certain locations are more likely to be crime targets than others. Specific physical and social environmental characteristics are identified and studied for these locations.

Course Objectives

The course deals with issues of crime and safety from an interdisciplinary perspective with a focus on situational perspectives tailored to students in urban planning, criminology, and landscape architecture, geography, sociology, as well as practitioners in municipalities, consultants, crime prevention organizations, and the police.

Course Format

Half of the course opportunities are online/virtual and half on site (KTH main campus). The course uses "blended learning" in three different ways: combining online digital media with traditional face-to-face contact, using both English and Swedish literature, and basing the course on both academic and practical knowledge.
