Program Overview

Introduction to the Program

The Technical Base Year is a tailored program for continued studies at KTH, and upon completion, it provides the opportunity to apply for specially reserved places in KTH's engineering programs. In addition to the possibility of applying based on grades and university entrance exams, there is a quota group that targets only those who have completed the Technical Base Year, where the selection is based on performance during the base year.

Opportunities with the Technical Base Year

The Technical Base Year provides eligibility to study KTH's engineering programs. During the base year, you study mathematics, physics, and chemistry, and get a sense of the study pace required at KTH's programs. After completing the program, you can apply for specially reserved places on one of KTH's engineering programs. Which program you can start on is based on your grades from your base year studies and, of course, which education you are applying for. There are enough reserved places in total for all students on the Technical Base Year, but only a certain number on each program, so it's not certain that you can get a place on the program you prefer the most.

Education

The Technical Base Year, 60 preparatory points, is a complementary education with high school courses in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. The program is aimed at those who lack eligibility in these subjects. The Technical Base Year can also suit those who are already eligible in the subjects but want to refresh their knowledge.

The education is tailored for continued studies at KTH. All courses are based on high school curricula, but differ in that the study pace is significantly higher. In addition to scheduled teaching - in the form of lectures, exercises, and lab work - much self-study and great personal responsibility are required. Through the Technical Base Year, you acquire a good study technique for future studies, and you also train in problem-solving and develop your creative thinking.

The Technical Base Year starts in the fall semester at KTH Campus, KTH Flemingsberg, and at learning centers in Norrtälje, Nynäshamn, and Södertälje. In the spring semester, the education starts at KTH Flemingsberg.

During two semesters, you study equivalent to:

  • Mathematics 3c and 4
  • Chemistry 1
  • Physics 1a and 2

You are eligible if you, in addition to basic eligibility, have at least a grade of E or Pass in any of the following courses:

  • Mathematics 2a
  • Mathematics 2b
  • Mathematics 2c / Mathematics B

Courses

Teachers say: "The basic education gives you a reserved place for one of KTH's engineering programs"

Reserved Place

During the spring semester, you apply for the education you want to study further within KTH. If you have completed the base year's courses, you have a reserved place on one of KTH's engineering educations. With your reserved place, you end up in your own selection group for the respective education.

You are not guaranteed a place on your first choice. There are enough reserved places in total for all students on the Technical Base Year, but only a certain number on each program, so it's not certain that you can get a place on the program you prefer the most. You compete with other students with a reserved place, where the selection is based on your grades from the base year. The better study results you have from the base year studies, the greater chance you have of getting into your first choice.

Teaching and Study Environment

The Technical Base Year is given at different locations: KTH Campus in Stockholm, KTH Flemingsberg, and at learning centers in Norrtälje, Nynäshamn, and Södertälje. The base year education has the same content regardless of which campus you choose to study on. After completing the base year, you have the same opportunities to apply for KTH's educations, regardless of which location you studied the technical base year on.

If you choose to study the base year on KTH Campus or KTH Flemingsberg, the teaching takes place on site. If you choose to study at a learning center, the teaching takes place together with your classmates on site through distance education. This means that you can study together with your classmates instead of sitting at home alone. The teaching is led by KTH's teachers, and at the center there are computers, a cafeteria, and some support staff. During lab work and certain other moments, it may be necessary to travel to KTH's campus in Flemingsberg.

What Do Students Think of the Education?

Contact students from the technical base education and ask about, for example, course content, student life, or the job as an engineer. You can also read interviews about their time at KTH.
