Program Overview
Course Overview
The course MH1030, Materials Design I, is a 7.5 credit course that introduces students to the field of materials and provides insight into their upcoming professional role. The course covers material design, choice of materials, and the relationships between structure and properties of different material groups, including metals, ceramics, polymers, and fiber-based materials.
Course Contents
The course is divided into two parts:
- Part 1: Introduction
- Introduction to material design
- Introduction to performance-characteristics-structure-production for engineering materials and functional materials
- Lab exercise in material design
- Introduction to choice of material
- Lab exercise in choice of material
- Introduction to material from an environmental and sustainability perspective
- Lab exercise in materials from an environmental and sustainability perspective
- Part 2: Project Work
- Information retrieval and referencing
- Introduction to written and oral technical reporting
- Project planning
- Materials science project work in groups
- Oral presentation of materials science project
- Written reporting of materials science project
Intended Learning Outcomes
After passing the course, the student should be able to:
- Define, give an account of, and describe basic concepts in material design
- Define, give an account of, and describe basic concepts in choice of material
- Describe relationships between performance-characteristics-structure-production for engineering materials and functional materials
- Describe and discuss sustainable development in material design
- Search, retrieve, refer, and evaluate information from different sources
- Plan and carry out a project in groups and present it written and oral
- Apply and justify choices of material for simple applications/final products
