Course Description
The course FAG3164 Planning Theory is a 7.5 credit course that focuses on individual readings of selected texts of the different strands in planning theory. The course is based on discussions and exercises at seminars, where students are expected to write notes on how their own subject and research relates to the readings.
Course Contents
The course contents include:
- Historical and contemporary development in the field of planning theory
- Central concepts from planning theory
- Relation between theory and methodology
- Use and value of theory in relation to planning practice
- Critical analysis of theoretical texts and their placement in a wider context of theoretical traditions
Intended Learning Outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Describe historical and contemporary development in the field of planning theory
- Identify, explain, and use central concepts from planning theory
- Discuss the relation between theory and methodology
- Discuss and evaluate the use and value of theory in relation to planning practice
- Critically analyse theoretical texts and place them in a wider context of theoretical traditions
- Position and relate own research to relevant strands of the wider historical context of planning theory and planning research

- A selection of scientific articles representing classical texts and the latest central texts and themes in the field - a reading list is distributed in connection with admission
