Program Overview


Course Overview

The course FCK3503, Engineering for a Sustainable Society, is a 3.0 credit course aimed at doctoral students. The overall goal of the course is to provide a sustainable and multidisciplinary perspective, inspiring students by linking science and societal challenges.


Course Structure

The course consists of seminars with external presenters, student presentations, and group work. It is organized into 6 seminars with lectures and presentations, including inspirational lectures by KTH staff and external professionals, as well as presentations by doctoral students.


Course Disposition

The course will feature:


  • Inspirational lectures targeting opening perspectives and providing tools to identify and understand societal challenges, technical needs, and innovative science.
  • Doctoral student presentations complementing the course, consisting of 3 presentations for each group of 4 or 5 students, focusing on:
    • Reviewing literature for the field and preparing a 10-minute online presentation.
    • Choosing a societal challenge and presenting an analysis with adequate support, examples, and arguments/facts.
    • Relating technical solutions and research challenges, critically presenting technologies and examining potential for empowering innovation and erasing bottlenecks.

Course Contents

The course includes:


  • Seminars with external lecturers about ongoing sustainability work.
  • Presentations given by students covering different aspects of sustainability.
  • Group discussions and analysis of material and information.

Intended Learning Outcomes

After completion of the course, students will have knowledge and know-how for:


  • Linking current societal challenges with engineering and research.
  • Taking a wider perspective and analyzing a problem or situation in the light of sustainable development goals.
  • Reviewing and quantifying technological and knowledge gaps with relation to societal challenges.

  • SEM1 - Seminars, 3.0 credits, grading scale: P, F Based on recommendation from KTH's coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disabilities.

Presence and participation, as well as preparing/presenting presentation material, are required.
