Program Overview
SD2414 Fibre Composites - Materials and Manufacturing
The course SD2414 Fibre Composites - Materials and Manufacturing is a 6.0 credit course that focuses on the manufacturing of reinforced polymer composites, the constituent materials, and their influence on the properties of the final product.
Information per Course Offering
The course is offered in the Spring semester of 2026, with two course offerings: one for single courses students starting on January 13, 2026, and one for programme students starting on January 13, 2026.
Course Syllabus
The course syllabus is available in an accessible format on the course page. The syllabus includes information on the course contents, learning outcomes, literature, and examination.
Content and Learning Outcomes
The course covers the following topics:
- Introduction and applications
- Constituent materials
- Properties
- Micromechanics
- Manufacturing techniques
- Modelling of manufacturing
- Machining
- Joining
- Repair
- Destructive and non-destructive testing
- Recycling
- Health and safety
The course aims to provide basic insight required to successfully design polymer composites. After completing the course, participants should be able to:
- Pick a suitable material concept and manufacturing method for a given composite product
- Determine a strategy for quality assurance
- Predict the mechanical properties of a composite laminate
- Describe how the properties of a composite material change with temperature
- Perform and analyze mechanical tests of composite materials
- Identify governing manufacturing process parameters and describe how they affect the quality and characteristics of the composite material
Literature and Preparations
The specific prerequisites for the course include a completed degree project on Bachelor level with a major in technology and English B/English 6. The course literature is available in the course memo or in the course room in Canvas.
Examination and Completion
The course is graded on a scale of A, B, C, D, E, FX, F. The examination consists of:
- ÖVN1 - Project, 1.5 credits
- TEN1 - Examination, 3.0 credits
- LAB1 - Laboratory Work, 1.5 credits
The examiner may adapt the examination format for students with documented disabilities. If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
Other Requirements for Final Grade
To receive a final grade, students must complete the following requirements:
- Experimental assignment (LAB; 1.5 university credits)
- Project assignment (ÖVN; 1.5 university credits)
- Examination (TEN; 3 university credits)
Examiner
The examiner for the course is Malin Åkermo.
Ethical Approach
The course emphasizes the importance of academic integrity, with all members of a group being responsible for the group's work. Students must honestly disclose any help received and sources used in any assessment.
Further Information
Registered students can find further information about the implementation of the course in the course room in Canvas. The course is offered by the SCI/Aeronautical and Vehicle Engineering department and is part of the second cycle of education.
