Program Overview
Course Overview
The course MF2039 Advanced Service Design is a 9.0 credit course that focuses on problem-based learning, where students learn the basics of service design theories, principles, processes, and methods. The course is carried out in teams, with instruction consisting of lectures, exercises, tutoring, and literature studies.
Course Content
The course content includes:
- Theory and practice in service design, its process, and methods
- Interview methodology, empirical analysis, synthesis, and production of trigger material
- Different sustainability dimensions and how these can be applied in the development of service concepts
- Creating service concepts that connect to the brief from a client and insights about users' needs and experiences
- Visualizing the final service concept in a short film/animation
Information per Course Offering
Course offerings are missing for current or upcoming semesters. However, the course syllabus is available in an accessible format.
Content and Learning Outcomes
Course Contents
The course focuses on problem-based learning in the form of service design projects carried out in collaboration with a client. The work is done in groups with continuous supervision, providing opportunities for feedback on the design process and continuous monitoring of learning. Lectures, exercises, and literature studies provide background and knowledge to students during the course of their work.
Skills trained and course content include:
- Theory, case studies, and background to the field
- Sustainability dimensions and how these can be applied in the development of service concepts
- Service design process and methods
- Concept development of a service offering that clearly links to insights into user experiences and needs
- Visualization and communication
Intended Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Create a service concept by applying the service design process and methods introduced in the course.
- Describe their own design process and the key decisions made during the project.
- Integrate sustainability aspects into the service concept and evaluate its contribution to sustainable development.
- Create a film that communicates the key elements of the service concept, including its context and the user problems and needs it addresses.
- Explain the basic meaning of service design principles, the service design process, methods, and key theoretical concepts, and explain how these relate to the project carried out in the course.
- Describe the ecological, economic, and social dimensions of sustainability and analyze their relevance and interrelationships in the project carried out.
Literature and Preparations
Specific Prerequisites
The specific prerequisites for the course include MF1061 Introduction to Design and Product Realisation (or MF1018 Industrial Design Prop), MF1062 Design and Product Realization, and MF1040 Design and Product Realization Methodology, or the equivalent knowledge.
Literature
Information about course literature can be found in the course memo for the course offering or in the course room.
Examination and Completion
