Ph.D. Degree in Soil Science

The Department of Soil Science at the College of Food & Agriculture Sciences offers a graduate program leading to a Ph.D. degree in Soil Science. This program reflects the multi-disciplinary characteristics of the department and provides students with a comprehensive education in soil science.


Program Objectives

The objectives of the Ph.D. program in Soil Science are to:


  1. Activate scientific research in soil science related to Saudi Arabian conditions, with emphasis on:
  • Arid and semi-arid soil characteristics studies
  • Problems of irrigated agriculture and sustainable soil management practices
  • Evaluation of arid lands quality for agriculture land use
  • Soil, water, and plant relations for conservation of water and other agricultural inputs
  • Maximizing the use of new technologies such as remote sensing, GIS, and bio-fertilizer in soil science studies
  1. Prepare scientifically qualified students in soil science to serve the Kingdom's development plans, including:
  • Academic staff for education and scientific research at universities and agricultural institutes
  1. Create new opportunities for cooperation between Ph.D. soil graduates working at research institutions and the university through cooperative applied research programs

Admissions

Admission to the Ph.D. program in Soil Science is open to all qualified students who hold a Master's degree in soil science or a related specialization from King Saud University or another qualified university. Students must:


  • Pass a personal meeting (interview) with the department's graduate committee
  • Have a TOEFL score of 450 or an equivalent English language examination, or an M.Sc. degree from a non-Arabic university with English as the language of study

Degree Requirements and Study Program

The study leading to a Ph.D. in Soil Science is primarily by dissertation and some courses. The program requires a minimum of 22 units, with 6 units that may be taken from the M.Sc. level not studied before. The department decides the study plan for students at the beginning of the first level, according to their minor specialization. A comprehensive exam is required, and students must prepare a dissertation (700 level) in their specialization that is original and specific.
