Introduction to the BA/BSc (Hons) Film Production Program
The BA/BSc (Hons) Film Production program is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the film industry. This program is offered at the SAE Institute in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Program Overview
The BA/BSc (Hons) Film Production program is a two-year full-time course that covers various aspects of film production, including cinematography, visual effects, directing, production, post-production, lighting, and sound. The program is divided into four semesters, each with a unique set of modules and learning outcomes.
Semester 1
In the first semester, students develop essential technical film skills and knowledge required to collaborate with other creative media students and professionals. The modules covered in this semester include:
- Film Fundamentals: This module introduces students to fundamental practices and processes within film production, gaining an overview of the film industry and its workflows.
- Film Development: This module enables students to explore the various creative and organizational elements that must be completed before advancing into the next phase of the production process.
- Financing Marketing & Publication: This module aims to develop a sense of what areas of work students may later take up in the industry and how to market their work within a team to a specific target group.
Semester 2
In the second semester, students focus on film production and post-production, gaining experience in a variety of production roles and working across a range of post-production processes. The modules covered in this semester include:
- Film Production: Students produce material (pre-production + production) for a short film based on their chosen script.
- Film Post-Production: Students complete post-production for a film, including editing, compositing, motion graphics, color grading, and writing a research paper.
- Collaborative Media Project: This module enables students to undertake a collaborative media project, gaining experience in the production of a dedicated creative media item and reflecting critically on both the production process and their creative practice.
Semester 3
In the third semester, students are introduced to a professional working environment where they undertake several prescribed project briefs using a project-based 'creative studio' approach. The modules covered in this semester include:
- Creative Studio 1: Students utilize complex and industry-relevant workflows for producing media projects in a simulated workplace setting.
- Research and Professional Development in Creative Media: Students design the final thesis for their bachelor's degree, developing an idea that brings together their personal or professional interests and creativity.
Semester 4
In the final semester, students specialize in their skills within their chosen area of the film industry. The modules covered in this semester include:
- Advanced Specialised Project: Students develop their professional practice through the planning and development of an independent activity, which may have a practical or theoretical focus and may be individual or collaborative.
- Major Project BA(or BSc): Students demonstrate their skills in a large-scale, advanced-level project, which may be a practice-based project (realization of a creative art project) or a research-based project.
