Introduction to Experiments on Organic Chemistry

The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences offers a comprehensive course in Experiments on Organic Chemistry, designed for undergraduate students majoring in chemistry and related fields. This course aims to deepen students' understanding of organic chemistry, train them in basic operating skills, and foster their ability to design and implement experiments.

Course Description

The course is a compulsory major course for undergraduates of chemistry and related majors. It is also available as an elective course for students majoring in material science and engineering, chemical engineering and technology, or life science. The course covers the fundamental principles of organic chemistry experiments, including synthesis, separation, and purification of organic compounds.

Course Objectives

The objectives of this course are to:

  • Deepen students' understanding of the basic theoretical knowledge of organic chemistry
  • Train students to master the basic operating skills of organic chemistry experiments
  • Improve students' practical ability and safety awareness
  • Understand the basic principle and preliminary application of related apparatuses and equipment
  • Train students' ability relating to experimental design, synthesis, purification, structure characterization, and judgment

Course Topics and Schedule

The course is divided into three parts:

  1. Introduction and training of main apparatuses (8 hours)
    • Introduction to general knowledge of organic chemistry experiments and laboratory safety techniques
    • Introduction to main laboratory apparatuses and their demonstration training
  2. Basic operating skills (8 hours)
    • Mastering distillation, recrystallization, filtration, and determination of boiling and melting points
    • Experiment 1: Recrystallization for purification and determination of melting point of solid samples
    • Experiment 2: Reduced pressure distillation
  3. Separation and synthesis experiment (24 hours)
    • Separation experiment: training students' basic skills of separation and purification compounds
    • Synthetic experiment: selecting comprehensive synthetic experiments and design experiments
    • Experiment 3: Principle and method of thin layer chromatography and separation and extraction of pigment
    • Experiment 4: The separation of racemic phenylethylamine
    • Experiment 5: Esterification - the preparation of carboxylic esters
