Program Overview
INTENSIVE PERIODONTICS COURSE
The Continuing Education Center at Future University in Egypt conducted an intensive periodontics course from February 26, 2012, to March 19, 2012.
Course Description
This comprehensive periodontal surgery course provided participants with the opportunity to be exposed to essential basic science information, patient evaluation and treatment planning guidelines, clinically proven concepts, basic and advanced periodontal surgery techniques, soft tissue management, oral soft tissue grafting, adjunctive cosmetic periodontal procedures, implant site development techniques, hands-on surgical skills training, and vital practice management information.
Course Structure
The course was divided into general session lectures and an interactive forum complemented by hands-on tutorials, providing step-by-step learning of basic and advanced surgery, hard and soft tissue implant site development, and cosmetic periodontal surgery. Live surgery was presented and performed by the candidates during the course.
Duration
The course was a continuing professional condensed education program, comprising four structured modules in the study and training in non-surgical and surgical periodontal treatment, twice weekly, extending over a period of four weeks.
Course Contents
The course was divided into four modules:
- Lectures
- Hands-on (simulation) on cadavers
- Live surgery demonstrations
- Live surgeries for candidates using bone grafts and membranes

- Biology of Periodontal Tissues
- Diagnosis and treatment planning
- Classification of periodontal disease
- Plaque control and non-surgical periodontal therapy
- Antimicrobial therapy in periodontal diseases
- Periodontal Surgery
- Flap types, design, suturing techniques, surgical instruments
- Regenerative Periodontal Therapy (bone grafts, membrane, growth factors)
- Bone defects and furcation lesions and how to manage them
- Root resectioning, and perio-endo lesions
- Gingival esthetics
- Principles of soft tissue grafting (techniques used)
- Gingival recession, and how to treat it
- Gingival overgrowth, causes and treatment
- Surgical crown lengthening
- Site preservation and development for implant placement and restorative treatment
- Socket preservation
- Save or Extract: Implants or periodontal treatment, the current dilemma
Hands-on Training
Workshops on sheep heads included:
- Suturing techniques
- Flap technique
- Soft tissue grafts
Live Surgeries
- Surgical Crown lengthening
- Connective tissue grafting techniques as well as free gingival graft
- Bone graft and GTR utilizing bone replacement materials and membranes
- Socket preservation: Grafting fresh extraction sockets for ridge preservation
