Program Overview

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering program is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of the fundamental subjects that underpin civil engineering. Through this program, students will gain the skills to design and propose solutions using advanced tools and technologies, including computer-aided design (CAD), geographical information systems (GIS), and 3D computer modeling.

Program Overview

Civil engineering is a broad discipline that covers many aspects of our everyday lives. As a civil engineer, graduates will have the chance to plan, design, construct, and manage various infrastructure projects, including towers, villas, highways, roads, transportation systems, sewage and water systems, desalination and waste-water treatment plants, tunnels, bridges, dams, canals, harbors, and ports.

Program Objectives

The program objectives are broad statements that describe the career and professional accomplishments that students should achieve within a few years following their graduation. These objectives reflect the impact and contributions our alumni should make as they advance in their professions and communities. In general, our graduates are expected to:

  • Be successfully employed as civil engineers, applying technical knowledge, design skills, and modern tools to develop innovative, sustainable, and practical solutions to societal and environmental challenges.
  • Pursue continuous professional development through advanced studies, certifications, and training to keep pace with emerging technologies and evolving practices in civil engineering.
  • Assume positions of responsibility and leadership in industry, government, or academia, demonstrating effective communication, teamwork, and project management skills in multidisciplinary and multicultural environments.
  • Uphold the highest professional and ethical standards, making informed decisions that protect public safety, respect environmental sustainability, and contribute positively to the advancement of their communities.

Student Outcomes

The following learning outcomes describe the competencies and skills that Abu Dhabi University Civil Engineering students will acquire by graduation:

  • An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying the principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  • An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs, taking into consideration public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  • An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  • An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments that take into consideration the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  • An ability to function effectively on a team whose members provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
  • An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  • An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge using appropriate learning strategies.

Career Opportunities

Both private companies and public agencies seek civil engineers for a variety of professional positions due to the versatility of their skills and their technical and management capabilities. Many graduates work for local and international engineering consulting firms or construction companies as design engineers, field engineers, and project managers. They also join government agencies to oversee transportation, water supply, environmental protection, and resource management.
