Program Overview
Introduction to Macquarie MD
The Doctor of Medicine (Macquarie MD) is a program designed to prepare students to become healthcare leaders who are patient-centred and safety-focused, culturally responsive, and equipped to work within increasingly digital health systems.
Program Overview
The Macquarie MD program offers:
- Fully integrated learning with outstanding patient-centred clinical care, and active health and medical research.
- The opportunity to become a culturally responsive, engaged, and globally aware medical professional.
- Access to quality-assured international education that benefits students, society, and the healthcare system.
Integrated Learning Experience
The Macquarie MD is a four-year Extended Masters course (AQF Level 9) with each year building on the previous one and having a distinct focus.
- Early years integrate clinical, scientific, professional, and cultural learning.
- Later years provide rich clinical learning opportunities with Australian and international partners.
Foundations of Medical Practice
Year 1 equips students with foundational knowledge and skills that will be developed across the program.
- Study applied medical sciences, integrating key science disciplines and clinical practice.
- Develop clinical and consultation skills using state-of-the-art simulation equipment.
- Co-learn with Doctor of Physiotherapy students across two units focusing on the social aspects of health, Indigenous health, evidence-based practice, and professionalism.
Integrated Clinical Learning
Year 2 introduces students to real clinical experiences within Macquarie University Health.
- Weekly cases and scenarios provide the basis for more advanced clinical skill development and a context for the integrated learning of applied clinical, medical, and social sciences.
- Students develop key research skills and study patient safety and quality within the context of critical care.
Core Clinical Placements
Year 3 focuses on clinical experience and training.
- As part of clinical training, students spend 24 weeks engaged in clinical placements in Australia and 22 weeks on clinical placement in India.
- Students discuss and compare their experience with peers in Australia and India through an online community of practice and learn about different cultures, diseases, and health systems.
- Students work on a research project throughout the year, focusing on an aspect of health systems, patient safety and quality, clinical research, or public health.
- In years 3 and 4, students are divided into two cohorts, A and B, for their clinical placements.
Advanced Clinical Placements
Year 4 consolidates learning and offers choice and flexibility.
- Students have the opportunity to complete a number of selective clinical placements and an emergency medicine and mental health placement.
- Selective and elective clinical placements are longer than those in Year 3, adding depth and breadth to clinical training.
- The final year allows students to reflect on their learning across the program and consolidate their knowledge as they prepare for internship.
Path to Becoming a Doctor
The innovative and fast-tracked Bachelor of Clinical Science is designed to be the ideal preparation for the Macquarie MD and other graduate-entry medicine courses.
- For international students, a Bachelor of Clinical Science/Doctor of Medicine (MD) package is available for eligible applicants.
