Introduction to ARTS1000 Humanities and the World

The unit ARTS1000, Humanities and the World, is an interdisciplinary introduction to the main methods used and issues considered in the study of the humanities, arts, and social sciences. It focuses on the key transferable skills that students will develop in their learning journey through the Bachelor of Arts. The unit explores how the humanities, arts, and social sciences respond to complex problems and social challenges, using case studies drawn from various disciplines and real-life situations.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:


  • Identify different disciplinary approaches and methods applied in the study of the humanities.
  • Recognise and advocate for the role of the humanities in society.
  • Understand what transferable skills are required to succeed in contemporary life and in the workplace.
  • Reflect on their learning and develop learning strategies for their studies across the Bachelor of Arts.

General Assessment Information

  • The unit is worth 10 credit points, equating to 150 hours of work.
  • Students should expect to commit an average of 10 hours per week to this unit.
  • The unit is a Pass/Fail unit, with students receiving either "S" for satisfactory or "F" for fail as their final result.
  • No final numerical grade will be given, but marks will be awarded for each assignment.
  • A late submission penalty applies, with a 5% penalty per day for up to 7 days, after which a mark of 0 will be awarded.

  • Skills Portfolio 1: 40%, due 28/08/2025
  • Skills Portfolio 2: 20%, due 09/10/2025
  • Skills Portfolio 3: 40%, due 06/11/2025 Each portfolio is a collection of evidence of skills development and requires students to demonstrate their understanding of disciplinary approaches, the role of humanities in society, transferable skills, and learning strategies.

Delivery and Resources

  • A one-hour lecture will be livestreamed each Wednesday from 11am-12pm, with a recording available for later viewing.
  • 'In Person Scheduled' and 'Online Scheduled' students will attend a weekly tutorial class, while 'Online Flexible' students will engage in asynchronous activities online.
