Macquarie University Program: CIVL3401 Construction Management

Overview

The objective of this unit is to provide the required knowledge to address effective planning, organising, application, coordination, monitoring, control, and reporting at different stages of construction projects. The unit helps students become familiar with the concepts of modern construction management, which include sustainable, environmentally friendly, and economic construction processes.

  • Unit description: The unit covers project management, business management, and administration and company management, including topics such as project procurement, estimating and tendering, competitive bidding, company budgetary control, economic assessment, company organisation, market planning and business development, construction logistics and risks, and information resources.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:


  • Demonstrate in-depth understanding of modern construction management
  • Identify and compare different project delivery methods and assess the associated risks
  • Estimate different construction timelines and required budgets
  • Explain estimating and tendering principles and practice in different construction projects
  • Differentiate and explain different contractual arrangements in the construction industry

General Assessment Information

  • Grading and passing requirements for the unit: A mark of 50 or more is required to pass
  • Late Assessment Submission Penalty: A 5% penalty of the total possible mark will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day

Assessment Tasks

  • Preliminary Design Report: 20% weighting, due 11:55pm Friday 19th September 2025
  • Final Bid Document: 40% weighting, due 11:55pm Friday 7th November 2025
  • Final Exam: 40% weighting, due during the exam period

  • A weekly workshop will allow students to interact with other team members and the teaching team
  • Weekly lectures and quizzes will assist students in achieving the learning outcomes and with preparation for the final exam
