Program Overview

Introduction to the Certificate in Subsea Engineering

The University of Houston Subsea Engineering Program offers two graduate certificates in subsea engineering. These programs are designed for engineers seeking graduate-level education in subsea engineering without pursuing a master's degree.

Program Overview

The graduate Certificate in Subsea Engineering programs are tailored for engineers who wish to acquire advanced knowledge in subsea engineering. The programs require applicants to hold a four-year bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. A GRE score is not mandatory for admission.

Admissions and Transfer Credits

Students admitted to the Subsea Certificate program may later apply to the Master's Subsea program. A maximum of three certificate courses can be transferred to the Master of Science in Subsea Engineering program.

Course Delivery

The Subsea Engineering courses are available in both face-to-face classroom settings and online.

Certificate Courses

Courses for each certificate program include:

  • Leveling courses: Up to 3 courses may be required for conditionally admitted students or those who did not take these courses in their previous education:
    • MATH 3321 - Engineering Mathematics (or equivalent)
    • MATH 3363 - Introduction to Partial Differential Equations (or equivalent)
    • MECE 3363 - Introduction to Fluid Dynamics (or equivalent)
    • MECE 4364 - Heat Transfer (or equivalent)
  • Certificate in Subsea Engineering:
    • Flow Assurance
    • Restricted Elective 1
    • Restricted Elective 2
  • Advanced Certificate in Subsea Engineering:
    • Restricted Elective 3
    • Restricted Elective 4
    • Restricted Elective 5

Restricted Electives

Restricted electives are selected from the following classes:

  • SUBS 6310 - Flow Assurance
  • SUBS 6320 - Riser Design
  • SUBS 6330 - Pipeline Design
  • SUBS 6340 - Subsea Processing and Artificial Lift
  • SUBS 6350 - Subsea Controls and Systems Engineering
  • SUBS 6351 - Design of Subsea Blow Preventers
  • SUBS 6360 - Subsea Materials and Corrosion
  • SUBS 6370 - Computational Methods and Design Experiments
  • SUBS 6380 - Subsea Systems
  • SUBS 6397 - Subsea Structures and Design
  • SUBS 6397 - Selected Topics

Academic Requirements

For each graduate program, students must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. Any graduate student who receives a grade of C+ or lower in four graduate courses is ineligible to receive an advanced degree. Each student is responsible for being familiar with the academic program requirements as stated in the current college and university catalogs.

Academic Regulations

Students are expected to review and adhere to the academic requirements and regulations outlined in the university's graduate catalog and student handbook.
