Program Overview
Graduate Program
The University of Houston offers a Master of Science in Subsea Engineering, as well as dual degree programs in Mechanical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering.
Course Description
The SUBS 6380: Subsea Systems course provides an in-depth look at the various aspects of subsea systems. Students will learn about the retrieval of hydrocarbons from subsea wells and their direction to the surface. The course covers equipment such as trees, jumpers, pipeline risers, manifolds, templates, pipeline end termination, remotely operated vehicles, and construction vessels.
Topics Covered
The course discusses subsea processing, well injection, flow assurance, field architecture, oceanography, material choices, corrosion prevention techniques, and controls and sensors. Additionally, students will learn about project management and the economics of subsea systems, with reference to applicable API codes.
Simulation Software Tools
Students are encouraged to use PIPESIM software for their final project, which offers comprehensive steady-state flow assurance workflows for front-end system design and production operations.
Course Grading
The course grade is based on homework, project, quizzes, and a final exam.
Project
The final project involves the development of a subsea system field, where students will conduct the design of a subsea infield and export architecture, sizing calculations to determine appropriate production tubing, tree bore size, flowline and riser sizes, installation sequence, and cost analysis.
