Program Overview
Alternative Teacher Certification
The Alternative Teacher Certification program at the University of Houston is a fully approved program by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The program sets students up for success from day one, with expert faculty who have worked in public schools themselves, providing real-world knowledge and skills that matter in the classroom.
Program Overview
The program is designed for individuals who already hold a bachelor's degree and are interested in transitioning into the teaching industry. There is a high demand for teachers in the Houston region, and this program enables students to work as full-time teachers, with salary and benefits, while gaining their certification.
Program Duration
The program takes roughly one year to complete. However, students can start teaching full-time, with pay and benefits, in August 2026.

Teaching Certifications
The program offers most teaching certifications, except for Physical Education & Health and Career & Technical Education.
Financial Aid
Unfortunately, financial aid does not apply to the Alternative Teacher Certification program, as it is a certification program and not a credit-bearing university class.
