Program Overview


Graduate College of Social Work

The Graduate College of Social Work offers various programs, including the MSW Program, PhD Program, and Dual Degree Programs.


Academics

MSW Program

The MSW Program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in social work. The program offers different formats, including face-to-face, hybrid, and online.


MSW | Hybrid Program

The Hybrid MSW program is designed for students who are working full-time while pursuing their MSW. The program is available to both full program and advanced standing students. Students can expect to earn an MSW in 3 years by completing essential coursework and practicum requirements according to the established degree plan.


  • The program starts with a 15 semester credit hour foundation offered across two semesters, which includes practicum.
  • The foundation curriculum begins with the Foundations of Social Work course (SOCW 6201).
  • Hybrid Program students will be assigned to a cohort and will take classes with this same cohort throughout the program.
  • Classes for the Hybrid Program will be held only at the UH Sugar Land campus.
  • During the fall and spring semesters, students are expected to be available following their classes for special presentations, advising, and student programming on various Saturdays throughout the semester.

The MSW curriculum is organized around content known as generalist practice in professional social work, and focuses on social, economic, and political justice, emphasizing critical thinking skills.

Program Details

  • The program is designed for students who are working full-time while pursuing their MSW.
  • Students who possess an undergraduate degree in social work from an accredited baccalaureate program in social work can be considered for advanced standing admission and complete their degree in approximately 2 years.
  • Some courses have portions that will be delivered online with classes meeting in a face-to-face classroom setting one to two Saturdays a month, and some courses will be delivered asynchronously online.
  • Lunch is provided on Saturdays when classes are held.
