Program Overview
teachHOUSTON Program
The teachHOUSTON program is designed for students in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and Cullen College of Engineering who have at least three semesters left at the university.
Eligibility
- Students in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and Cullen College of Engineering who have at least three semesters left at the university are eligible to join the program.
- Students who are interested in participating in the teachHOUSTON Program should complete the interest form.
Program Requirements
- Sign up for Introduction to STEM Teaching (CUIN 2300).
- In this course, students will learn about teaching math or science and gain valuable teaching experience in public school classrooms.
- Registration does not require prior approval.
- Courses may be completed along a variety of pathways.
Mandatory Criminal Background Check
According to TAC 227.1, it is a mandatory requirement for teacher preparation candidates/students to complete a comprehensive criminal background check. This is a prerequisite for completing field-based experiences. District partners will most likely perform the background check on behalf of potential candidates. Failure to pass the criminal background check will result in immediate ineligibility for field-based components of teachHOUSTON. Applicants/students who are found to be ineligible will be withdrawn from consideration for the program.

Alternative Certification and Teacher Leadership Program
The program also offers alternative certification and a teacher leadership program for students who are interested in pursuing a career in teaching.
