Program Overview

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Training

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is a comprehensive, legislated program that ensures the "Right to Know" about hazardous materials in the workplace. This program is the result of joint development by federal and provincial governments, industry, and labor.

WHMIS Program Description

WHMIS is incorporated into the Occupational Health and Safety Act and is law in the Province of Ontario. The legislation states that if employees work with or are in proximity to hazardous materials, their employer must take several steps to ensure that the necessary information is available and understood.

WHMIS Course Registration

The Occupational Health and Safety Act requires all employees or supervisors of employees who work with or are in proximity to chemicals to receive WHMIS training. After completing the Full WHMIS training, employees are required to complete an online Refresher quiz on an annual basis.

WHMIS Training Details

  • The training presentation is a maximum of 2 hours in duration.
  • In-person lectures for Full WHMIS are not currently available; instead, WHMIS training is provided through OnQ.
  • For Full WHMIS or the first WHMIS training at Queen's, select "EHS 010 EHS WHMIS2015 - Online Learning".

Online WHMIS Annual Refresher Quiz

If employees completed Full WHMIS at Queen's in a previous year, they are eligible to complete the Annual Refresher quiz. To complete the quiz, employees must self-register for "EHS - WHMIS2015 Annual Refresher".
