Program Overview
Introduction to the Computer Game Design Program
The Computer Game Design program at George Mason University is a comprehensive course of study that focuses on the design and development of video games. From the first day, students are encouraged to learn, experiment, and grow in a supportive environment.
Program Overview
Students in the program gain experience working with and developing games of all types, including board games. The curriculum is designed to help students develop a wide range of skills, from game design and development to critical thinking and problem-solving.
Expand Your Skills
The program offers a wide range of opportunities for students to expand their skills, including internships in quality assurance and game development with companies that work with the Virginia Serious Game Institute. Students can also work as teaching assistants in the Mason Game and Technology Academy, helping new generations of students to discover their love of gaming.
Faculty and Research
The faculty in the Computer Game Design program are award-winning and dedicated to helping students succeed. Assistant Professor of Game Writing, Dr. Seth Hudson, works with students in the classroom and has research interests in game writing and narrative design, as well as reflective practice and identity.
Student Experience
Students in the program come from a wide range of backgrounds and have diverse interests. For example, one student, Nicolo Allado, has a wide range of interests ranging from history to conducting, which has exposed him to multiple different perspectives and made him a more versatile and creative individual in his work.
Curriculum
The curriculum in the Computer Game Design program is designed to help students develop a strong foundation in game design and development. Many students begin with GAME 210: Basic Game Design, where they create their own card or board game from scratch. Student teams playtest their games, testing for bugs and design flaws, and concept art for the final design of several cards can be seen in the foreground of the picture above.
Admission and Requirements
To study Game Design at George Mason University, students do not need to be master-level code writers or have an extensive portfolio. Curiosity, willingness to learn, and a love for the power of games will lead to a student's success in the program. The faculty and staff work hard to meet students where they are as they enter the program and help them grow.
