Program Overview
Introduction to the BSc in Engineering Science
The BSc in Engineering Science at Politecnico di Milano is designed for future engineers with a broad mindset, strong scientific and technical reasoning, and the ambition to make a meaningful impact. Positioned at the intersection of traditional engineering disciplines, the programme fosters scientific and engineering breadth and is rooted in the belief that the development of innovative solutions requires early interdisciplinary thinking and action.
Course Overview
The BSc in Engineering Science is an international bachelor's degree combining a robust scientific foundation with interdisciplinary engineering breadth. The programme is ready to join an international engineering programme with a solid grounding bridge between science and engineering, where competencies are developed across traditional boundaries.
Structure
The programme consists of three main areas:
- Core Area (CORE): A common area that integrates fundamental sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry and materials, and computer science) with engineering through an original and innovative approach.
- Direction Area (DIRECTION): An area offering a first set of elective courses that guide students toward one or more disciplinary directions in view of their choice of the focus area.
- Focus Area (FOCUS): A disciplinary or thematic in-depth area, where a selected range of third-year elective courses is offered among the full spectrum of the existing engineering curricula—enabling students to progressively deepen their knowledge in the engineering field that best aligns with their personal interests and goals.
- Final Project (CAPSTONE): A final hands-on interdisciplinary project, often in collaboration with industry or research labs, aimed at consolidating and integrating the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the programme and applying them to tackle real-world problems.
Teaching and Assessment
The BSc in Engineering Science adopts an innovative and student-centred teaching approach that combines robust theoretical grounding with active learning and real-world application. Courses are delivered through a balanced mix of lectures, interactive classes, hands-on and virtual labs, project-based work, and group activities designed to foster collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.
Career and Future Opportunities
Graduates of the BSc in Engineering Science are equipped with a strong scientific background and command of engineering fundamentals, including analytical, computational, experimental, and design capabilities, all within an interdisciplinary framework. They also develop communication and interpersonal skills—such as teamwork and intercultural competence—through continuous interaction with an international and culturally diverse student cohort.
Where You'll Study
Studying Engineering Science means being immersed in a vibrant, international environment. The programme is offered across two campuses in Milan—a global capital of innovation, design, and technology—providing countless opportunities for cultural enrichment, networking, and personal growth.
- Leonardo Campus: Located near Milan's historical center, Leonardo is the university's largest and oldest campus. It hosts programmes in Engineering and Architecture and offers state-of-the-art laboratories, extensive libraries, and a lively international student community.
- Bovisa Campus: Set in a former industrial district in northern Milan – now transformed into a modern academic hub – Bovisa is home to Engineering and Design Programmes. It stands out as a center for technology and creativity, featuring one of the largest wind tunnels in Europe, cutting-edge research facilities, and easy connections to both the city center and Leonardo Campus.
