Program Overview

Mechanical Engineering Program

The Master's Degree program in Mechanical Engineering aims to train professionals with a solid engineering background and extensive technical and practical knowledge, capable of successfully operating in sectors characterized by high technological levels, strong interdisciplinarity, and multidisciplinarity, in an international and constantly evolving job market.

Eligibility

To be admitted, it is necessary to hold a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or in a related field. A solid foundation in Mathematics, Physics, Principles of Electrical Engineering, Thermodynamics, General and Applied Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Fluid Dynamics, Production Technologies, Production Systems, and Materials is essential. A committee will evaluate the applications of students with different backgrounds on a case-by-case basis.

Mission and Goals

The program prepares graduates to quickly adapt to the most diverse professional needs. The knowledge acquired in the various courses is offered in an educational context that aims not only to verify the assimilation of content but also to develop an aptitude for solving new and complex problems in a scientifically rigorous manner, to critically evaluate issues, and to create independent judgment.

Specialization Tracks

The specialization tracks, entirely offered in English, include specific courses starting from the first year and cover a wide range of fundamental mechanical skills and multidisciplinary applications:

  • Core mechanical competencies:
    • Digital Technologies for Product Development (Milano Bovisa)
    • Materials Design and Processing for Industrial Engineering (Milano Bovisa)
    • Computational Mechanical Design (Milano Bovisa)
    • Sustainable Manufacturing Engineering (Milano Bovisa)
    • Production Engineering (Milano Bovisa)
    • Data Science for Industrial Engineering (Milano Bovisa)
  • Core mechanical application fields:
    • Automotive and motorsport (Milano Bovisa)
    • Marine engineering (Milano Bovisa)
    • Railway engineering (Milano Bovisa)
    • Mechatronics and robotics (Milano Bovisa)
    • Mechatronics for manufacturing
    • Smart and sustainable industry
  • Cross-disciplinary application fields:
    • Propulsion and power (Milano Bovisa)
    • Wind energy (Milano Bovisa)
    • Defense and security (Milano Bovisa)
    • Bioinspired engineering (Milano Bovisa)
    • Micro and nano systems (Milano Bovisa)
    • Sports engineering

Subjects

In the first year, each track includes six mandatory courses, totaling 40-45 credits, which cover advanced mechanical skills. Additionally, 15-20 credits are allocated to courses focused on specific skills of the chosen specialization track. The second year offers a wide range of courses, allowing students to select courses totaling 40 credits and to personalize their educational path according to their interests and aptitudes.

Career Opportunities

Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest and most versatile engineering disciplines. It synergistically combines the principles of physics and mathematics with materials science to design, analyze, produce, and maintain systems capable of generating force and motion. Graduates find career opportunities in numerous industrial sectors, including transportation systems, industrial equipment and machinery, and production plants.
