Program Overview

Degree Programme in Civil Engineering

The Master of Science in Civil Engineering deals with the design, assessment, monitoring, management, and rehabilitation of constructions and infrastructures. Constructions encompass buildings, places of assembly, structural parts of industrial facilities and energy production plants, bridges, tunnels, and dams. Infrastructures include roads, railways, airports, networks for collection, distribution, and disposal of water, and works aimed at protecting land and environment.

School of Civil, Environmental and Land Management Engineering

The two-year MSc programme completes the training gained during the bachelor's degree programme, achieving an education adequate to the demands of a rapidly changing world of work. This is in line with the regulations of most European countries, where the second-level diploma (MSc), achieved after five years of university education, is preferred to the BSc and often required for employment in the field of Civil Engineering.

Master of Science (MSc) Degree Programme

The graduate programme aims to strengthen the basic training of students and provide them with adequate knowledge of the core subjects of Civil Engineering. The MSc offers four different tracks, corresponding to suggested study plans, which allow students to specialize in either Geotechnics, Hydraulics, Transportation Infrastructures, or Structures. The specialization tracks Geotechnics and Structures are entirely taught in English, while the other tracks consist mostly of subjects taught in Italian.

Duration of the MSc Degree Programme

The MSc Degree Programme lasts 2 years.

Study Plan

The study plans of the tracks offered in the MSc Degree Programme, together with details on the contents of the individual subjects, are available. For a description of the educational goals of the different tracks, the following areas are covered:

  • Geotechnics
  • Transportation Infrastructures
  • Water Engineering
  • Structures
  • Structures - Earthquake Engineering

Enrollment

The requirements to be met for admission to the MSc Degree Programme are specified in the educational rules.

Educational Rules

The educational rules of the MSc Degree Programme in Civil Engineering are established to ensure a high-quality education.

Final Examination

The coordinator of the final examination sessions is responsible for overseeing the examination process. The Regulations of the graduation examination are established to ensure a fair and rigorous assessment.

Degree Sessions

The dates of the Degree sessions are scheduled to allow students to plan accordingly.

Internal Double Degrees

Internal double degrees are developed jointly with other Master of Science Programmes to integrate the Civil Engineer educational path with knowledge from other specific fields. By acquiring 180 credits after completing the Bachelor of Science Programme, the candidate will obtain an additional Master of Science Degree in another Programme.

Professional Opportunities

Engineers having obtained the MSc degree find job opportunities in the following areas:

  • Offices and companies involved in the design of buildings, plants, and infrastructures
  • Construction and maintenance companies involved in civil works, plants, and civil infrastructures
  • Universities and higher education research institutions
  • Public offices involved in the design, planning, management, and control of urban and land systems
  • Service companies dealing with the urban and environmental impact of infrastructures
  • Companies, government offices, agencies, consortia, and management agencies for surveying and monitoring

Further Studies

Students achieving the MSc in Civil Engineering are entitled to access the PhD Programmes offered by the School of Doctoral Programmes. Additionally, Specializing Masters, 2nd level Specialization Courses, and other Postgraduate Programmes are available.
