Program Overview

The Enabling Infrastructure in Africa for the Next Production Revolution program is a MOOC designed to introduce participants to the concept of smart and integrated infrastructures as a catalyst for prosperity in Africa. The course focuses on energy, digital, and mobility infrastructures, which are essential for modern societies.

Course Description

The program is part of a series of Sprint MOOCs addressing the Next Production Revolution paradigm. It is designed for individuals from anywhere in the world, including industrialized economies and developing countries, particularly those from Africa. The course describes enabling infrastructures for the Next Production Revolution, emphasizing the need for new approaches in infrastructure design to meet NPR requirements and foster sustainable development.

Learning Outcomes

By actively participating in this MOOC, participants will achieve the following intended learning outcomes:

  • Recognize and explain how smart and integrated infrastructure facilitates the Next Production Revolution, ensuring a sustainable path towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Identify and describe the role and technical requirements of emerging digital infrastructures, including advanced communication networks essential for NPR applications.
  • Understand and discuss the significance of green infrastructures, particularly distributed renewable energy sources and sustainable transportation solutions, for effectively addressing contemporary environmental and economic challenges.

Course Structure

The program consists of four weeks of study, with the following topics covered:

Week 0 - Introduction to the Course

Introduction to the course and its objectives.

Week 1 - Smart and Integrated Infrastructure in Africa for the Next Production Revolution

The importance of introducing new approaches in infrastructure design to meet NPR requirements and foster sustainable development.

Week 2 - Digitalisation: The New Era of Infrastructure

Digital technological breakthroughs for NPR, including communication networks and technical requirements for NPR applications.

Week 3 - Decarbonisation: The Nexus Energy-Climate-Development

Energy infrastructures required for NPR, including distributed renewable energy power sources and the transport sector with greener solutions.

Week 4 - Mobility: The Goal of Connecting People and Goods

Innovations in the transport of people and goods, highlighting the goal of connecting them.

Assessment and Certificate

The final grade for the course will be based on the results of assessed quizzes. Participants will have an unlimited number of attempts at each quiz but must wait 15 minutes before retrying. A certificate in the form of an Open Badge can be achieved by scoring at least 60% of the total score in each assessed quiz and filling out the final survey.
