The PhD in Linguistics is a doctoral program that aims to promote students' ability to develop autonomous research. The program is organized according to topics under debate in Linguistics and relates the identification of problems to the presentation of concepts, theories, and techniques.

• To deepen the ability to think about central aspects of the selected topic

• To develop the ability to identify research problems, to formulate and test hypotheses, thus providing new results in the field

Career Prospects

This course trains students for research on the Portuguese language, in its dialectal, historical, and national varieties, taking it as a single focus, or in a comparative, theoretical, or translinguistic perspective. The flexible curriculum structure includes individualized study plans, adapted to the objectives of the research projects and specific training needs.

Access and Admission

The admission criteria for the PhD in Linguistics follow the University of Lisbon Postgraduate Studies Regulation. Students applying to this program must match one of the three following conditions:

• Hold an MA degree or equivalent
• Hold a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, as well as an academic or scientific curriculum considered by the Scientific Council as relevant for attending the program
• Exceptionally, hold an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum considered by the Scientific Council as showing their ability to become a student at the PhD program, but no Bachelor's degree
