Program Overview
Program Overview
The Doctoral Program in Design aims to provide advanced individual research development, preferably integrated into evaluated and funded projects, leading to the creation and transmission of knowledge. The program's specific objectives include intellectual satisfaction, acquiring advanced competencies for informed professional practice, and contributing to societal and economic development.
Objectives
- Satisfaction of intellectual curiosity
- Acquisition of advanced competencies for professional practice
- Contribution to societal and economic development
Program Structure
The program is organized according to the Bologna principles. In the first year, students attend several curricular units to acquire knowledge and skills in research methodologies, lines of investigation, and constructing an individual research project. The completion of these objectives is assessed through the work produced in each unit, culminating in the approval of the Thesis Project, which allows students to register their theme and initiate individual research work.
Second and Third Years
In the second and third years, students dedicate themselves to developing and operationalizing their research, culminating in the defense of their dissertation. Their evolution is assessed through the evaluation of semi-annual reports and progress seminars.
Academic Calendars
The Faculty of Architecture (FA-ULisboa) offers two academic calendars for doctoral courses: a normal regime with classes and evaluation periods from September to July, and an intensive regime with classes every day of the week, each semester lasting 5 weeks. There is no distinction between these regimes in terms of study plans, requirements, tuition fees, etc., with the only difference being the academic calendar.
Professional Outcomes
Graduates can pursue careers as:
- Researchers in Design and related areas
- Project managers in research
- Senior staff in companies, institutions, and organizations integrating research and development
