Program Overview
The University of Lisbon (UL) and the University of Porto (UP) jointly offer a Doctoral Program in Biodiversity, Genetics, and Evolution (BIODIV) in the area of Biological Sciences. This program is supported by the Faculties of Sciences of the Universities of Lisbon (FCUL) and Porto (FCUP), in collaboration with the Center for Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Changes (cE3c/FCUL), the Center for Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO/UP), the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMC), and the Institute of Molecular and Pathological Biology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP).
Objectives
The BIODIV program aims to provide postgraduate education leading to the award of a Doctoral degree in the specialties referred to in the respective study plan. The program consists of a one-year taught component, including laboratory rotations, advanced courses and seminars, and modular disciplines, followed by a three-year research component leading to the preparation of a thesis.
Admission Criteria
Admission to the program is based on the following criteria:
- Holders of a Bachelor's degree in Biology or related fields, obtained before the implementation of the Bologna Process
- Holders of a Master's degree in Biology or related fields
- Holders of an equivalent qualification
- Holders of a scientific or professional curriculum that demonstrates the capacity for doctoral studies
Tuition Fees
The indicative tuition fee for the first year is 2,750.00, and the same amount applies to the subsequent years.

Program Structure
The program has a taught component of one year, with laboratory rotations, advanced courses, and seminars, and a research component of three years, leading to the preparation of a thesis. Students can benefit from the resources of the University of Lisbon and the University of Porto at any stage of the doctoral program, although each student is enrolled and preferably affiliated with one of the two universities.
Internationalization
The program is offered in association with the Faculty of Sciences - University of Porto, and it is part of the internationalization strategy of the University of Lisbon. The program welcomes international students and offers a unique opportunity for students to study in a multicultural and multilingual environment.
Accreditation
The program is accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES) and is registered with the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES).
