PhD in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution
Program Overview
Program Overview
The University of Lisbon (UL) and the University of Porto (UP) jointly offer a Doctoral Program in Biodiversity, Genetics, and Evolution (BIODIV) in the area of Biological Sciences. The program is ensured by the Faculties of Sciences of the Universities of Lisbon (FCUL) and Porto (FCUP), in collaboration with the Center for Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Changes (cE3c/FCUL), the Center for Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO/UP), the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMC), and the Institute of Molecular and Pathological Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP).
Program Objectives
The BIODIV program aims to provide postgraduate education leading to the award of a Doctoral degree in the specialties referred to in the respective study plan. The program has a one-year teaching component, with laboratory rotations, advanced courses and seminars, and modular disciplines, and a three-year research component, leading to the preparation of a thesis. Students can benefit from the resources of the University of Lisbon and the University of Porto at any stage of the doctoral program, although each student is enrolled and preferably affiliated with one of the two universities.
Competencies
In addition to contributing to the increase of scientific knowledge, the BIODIV doctoral program aims to stimulate and demonstrate the transfer of knowledge to the business environment and to society. In this context, opportunities arising from research contracts with development agencies and companies, public or private, are also explored, whose results are intended to be innovative and, if possible, with direct application potential in different sectors of society (e.g., environment, agriculture, forestry, biomedicine, among many others).
Professional Outcomes
The human resources trained under the BIODIV program can easily integrate into the strategies of intelligent specialization defined for the regions or at the national level. On the other hand, they will certainly play a relevant role in the dissemination of scientific culture or in the promotion of cultural activities through their interaction with institutions dedicated to this effect (e.g., Natural History and Science Museums, Foundations, NGOs, and other types of associations).
