Program Overview

The Mestrado em Ecologia Marinha is a postgraduate program that focuses on the analysis of oceanic and coastal environments and the problems associated with them. The program aims to provide a comprehensive and integrated approach to the analysis, evaluation, and conservation of marine ecosystems.

Objectives

The main objectives of the program are:

• To constitute a postgraduate formation, theoretical and practical, centered on the analysis of oceanic and coastal environments and the problems associated with them.
• To privilege comprehensive and integrated strategies of analysis, evaluation, and conservation of marine ecosystems.

Upon completion of the program, students should have acquired competencies that enable them to:

• Resolve theoretical and experimental problems in marine ecology and execute laboratory/field work conducive to the study of hypotheses to be tested.
• Collect, select, and interpret information in order to point out solutions to reduce the impact of human activities on the marine environment, framing them within the current environmental legislation (national and community).
• Disseminate the information obtained during their work to the general public and to their peers, through the publication of results.

Competencies

The program aims to provide students with the following competencies:

• Recognition of the environmental services of the Ocean and the fundamentals of its sustainable use.
• Understanding of the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems, human/Ocean interactions, and the governance of the marine environment.
• Integration of the areas of ecology, planning, and management of marine space, environmental assessment, and management of living and non-living resources of the Ocean, for the compatibility of human activities with the conservation of the marine environment.

Graduates of the program can pursue careers in:

• Companies and public institutions with activities in the domains of characterization, study, planning, and management of the marine, coastal, and oceanic environment.
• Companies linked to the blue economy, in areas such as marine farming, tourism, biotechnology, ocean energy, or marine mining.
