Program Overview

Master's Programmes

The Master's Programmes at Técnico Lisboa offer a wide range of academic programmes of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cycles with a strong investment in continuous training.

Applied Mathematics and Computation

Programme Overview

In our daily lives, we are increasingly understanding that emerging technological areas, such as the productive sector, the financial market, information security, computational biology, telecommunications, robotics, nanotechnologies, or quantum computing, have a large mathematical component. Applied Mathematics and Computation models systems from different technological areas and develops mathematical solutions that help their study or optimization, putting them into practice with the help of computational tools.

Programme Structure

The 2nd cycle in Applied Mathematics and Computation has a duration of 4 semesters (2 years), equivalent to 120 ECTS.

  • The structure is depicted below:
    • 1st year (ECTS): 48, 12
    • 2nd year (ECTS): 12, 18, 30

Programme Details

The curricula of the 1st and 2nd Cycle were reformed in the 2021/2022 academic year, following Decree-Law 65/2018 and the implementation of a new teaching model. The MSc programme in Applied Mathematics and Computation derives from the former Mathematics and Applications.

Core Structure (60 ECTS)

The Master Programme in Applied Mathematics and Computation deepens the knowledge acquired in the 1st Cycle, in the areas of specialization:

  • Mathematics: all subjects from three to five of the following scientific areas are offered a choice:
    • Algebra and Topology
    • Real Analysis and Functional Analysis
    • Differential Equations and Dynamic Systems
    • Mathematical physics
    • Geometry
  • Applied and Industrial Mathematics: all subjects can be chosen, part of which is included in the scientific area of Numerical Analysis and Applied Analysis
  • Logic and Computing: with the possibility of choosing half of the subjects outside the Logic and Computing scientific area
  • Probabilities and Statistics: with the possibility to choose from all disciplines in the scientific area Probabilities and Statistics or abroad

Free Options (30 ECTS)

Part of the curriculum is of fully free choice, i.e., students may choose subjects not only in Mathematics but also in any other scientific field offered by Técnico.

  • This component offers the possibility to take a Minor a number of multidisciplinary courses which is equivalent to 18 ECTS credits
  • Minors: the offer cuts across all programmes offered by Técnico
  • Extra-curricular activities may also be credited, to a maximum of 6 ECTS credit points

Dissertation (30 ECTS)

The dissertation is the final assignment of the study cycle, which allows students to focus and specialize on a specific subject that may take any of these formats:

  • Scientific thesis
  • Internship at a company
  • Capstone project

Target Audience

The Master Programme in Applied Mathematics and Computation is targeted at graduates in Mathematics, Science, or Engineering.

  • The programme is taught in Portuguese; however, if there are international or mobility students enrolled, the curricular units will be taught in English

Career Opportunities

Técnico MSc graduates in Applied Mathematics and Computation may work in:

  • Banking and insurance
  • Telecommunications
  • Industry
  • Playing roles in the following fields:
    • Information security
    • Computational Biology
    • Optimization of networks
    • Robotics
    • Computation and quantum information
    • Market studies
    • Nanotechnology
    • Audit
    • Consultancy
    • Research

Entry Requirements

To apply for a 2nd Cycle at Técnico, you should:

  • Hold a 1st cycle degree in Science and Technology (except in the case of the 2nd cycle in Architecture, which requires a 1st cycle degree in Architecture)
  • Hold an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum that certifies their ability to do the MSc programme which they apply for
  • Candidates are selected according to these criteria:
    • Affinity between the degree they hold and the programme they apply for
    • Type of degree they hold
    • Academic success in the programme they attended

Students' Organisations

Técnico students autonomously and proactively stimulate projects that complement their academic background. For example, Students' Organisations provide them with skills and added value, making them more competitive in the labour market.

  • Mathematics Student Group (NMath) is the main student organisation in mathematics and promotes several activities:
    • Workshops and training
    • Organisation of the Mathematics Meetings
    • Organisation of the National Meeting of Mathematics Students
    • Course Magazine (Ponto Fixo)
    • Study Materials Repository
    • Connection to alumni (former students of the course)
    • Técnico Summer Internships
    • Playful, sports, and leisure activities
