Master in Territorial Management and Urban Studies

The Master's degree in Territorial Management and Urban Studies (MOTU) aims to provide advanced training in critical reflection and in the practice of spatial planning and territorial management.

Global Vision

The course results from the articulation of efforts between three schools of the University of Lisbon - Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT), Lisbon School of Architecture (FA), and Instituto Superior Técnico (IST).

Goals

This master's degree will allow students to develop skills such as:

  • Critically reflect on the relationship between society and the territory
  • Apply advanced and innovative techniques of information processing in the analysis of problems and responses in the field of spatial planning and urbanism
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, and evaluation of integrated territorial strategies and policies for smart, inclusive, and sustainable growth
  • Design territorial impact plans, as well as their monitoring and evaluation documents
  • Formulate innovative, integrated, and participatory solutions in the context of spatial planning and its planning and management process
  • Assess the costs and benefits of solutions and projects, identify and manage conflicts in the design and implementation phase, and support decision-making
  • Efficiently and innovatively communicate the identified problems and the results and proposals of territorial intervention

Target Audience

All applications of students with higher education such as Geography, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Territory or Environment, Landscape Architecture, Economics, Sociology, or other related areas that share, at least in part, concerns with the development and qualification of the territory will be considered.

Career Opportunities

MOTU provides two types of professional opportunities: researchers and spatial planning and management technicians, both guided by scientific rigor and the spirit of innovation and initiative. Their employers are public bodies and private advisory bodies, as well as research institutions.

Research

MOTU's faculty is involved in several nationally and internationally funded research projects, integrating scientific networks, together with municipalities, government institutions, and the business sector. The participation of students in ongoing research lines is stimulated and understood as a resource of great interest for advanced professional training.

Operating Regime

The Program is offered during the week during work and on a face-to-face regime. Students will take classes on the three schools' campuses, taking advantage of their resources and distinctive academic interaction.

Coordination

The Course Coordination is ensured by three professors appointed by each of the three institutions and by the Scientific Committee.

Language

The curricular units include components in Portuguese and English, and some can be entirely taught in English.
