Program Overview

Mechanical Engineering Programme

The Mechanical Engineering programme is fundamental in the manufacture of various objects used daily, from bicycles to notebooks, as well as in the automation of the world around us. The role of a mechanical engineer is to analyse, design, and develop components, tools, machines, and equipment, and also perform functions of organization and management of production in an industry.

Programme Overview

The Mechanical Engineering programme has a duration of 6 semesters (3 years), equivalent to 180 ECTS. The structure is as follows:

  • 1st year: 30 + 21 + 9 ECTS
  • 2nd year: 30 + 30 ECTS
  • 3rd year: 54 + 6 ECTS

Programme Structure

The curricula of the 1st and 2nd cycles were reformed in the 2021/2022 academic year, following Decree-Law 65/2018 and the implementation of a new teaching model. The Mechanical Engineering undergraduate programme derives from the former Mechanical Engineering Integrated Master's programme.

Study Plan

The study plan consists of:

  1. Basic Sciences (60 ECTS): fundamental training in Mathematics, Physics, Programming, and Chemistry.
  2. Core Structure (105 ECTS): complementary training in Specific Fields (e.g., materials science, solid mechanics) and Engineering Sciences (e.g., thermodynamics, fluid mechanics).
  3. Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (9 ECTS): students can choose subjects from areas like Management, Economics, Literature, Psychology, Visual Arts, or Sport.
  4. Integrative Project (6 ECTS): students work on a topic related to Mechanical Engineering, developing a solution in teams.

Entry Requirements

National Admission to Higher Education:

  • National Admission Exams: Mathematics A + Physics and Chemistry
  • Application Grade: MS x 50% + PI x 50%
    • Minimum grade point: 100 points (out of 200) for National Admission Exams
    • Minimum grade point: 120 points (out of 200) for Application Grade
    • MS: high school final arithmetic average grade
    • PI: Average of national admission exams' grades

Admissions can also be done through:

  • Course Change and Transfer
  • Holders of Middle Level/Higher Education degrees
  • Applicants over the age of 23
  • Special Admission Regime for International Students

Students' Organisations

Técnico students autonomously and proactively stimulate projects that complement their academic background. For example, Fórum Mecânica is the main students' organisation of mechanical engineering students, carrying out activities such as:

  • Field trips
  • Workshops and training
  • Organisation of events
  • Study Materials Repository
  • Técnico Summer Internships
  • Leisure and sports initiatives
