Program Overview
- Credits: 180 ECTS
- Duration: 6 semesters
- Regime: Presential

Presentation
This doctoral program falls within the epistemological and ontological field of artistic education, opening spaces for questioning the naturalized narratives around the arts and their relationships with education. It offers a space of plurality and difference where students are invited to rehearse singular gestures, informed by their inscription in terms of an international state of the art, thinking about the dialogical relationships between artistic practices and educational practices. The program enables advanced research work in the field of visual arts, performing arts, educational work in artistic and cultural institutions, and art teaching.
Objectives
The program aims to develop in-depth knowledge in the domain of Artistic Education (AE) and systematic research competencies, both from a theoretical-epistemological and methodological point of view, allowing for the resolution of critical problems in the area of research and/or innovation or the expansion and redefinition of existing knowledge or professional practices in a territory that, assuming an autonomous space, involves the area of Art and Education Sciences.
Expected Outcomes
With the completion of the program, students are expected to acquire the following knowledge and competencies:
- Know the field of research in AE, at national and international levels.
- Develop a critical understanding of AE.
- Develop action/research practices in the scope of AE with implications in community, cultural, educational, and social contexts.
- Implement and deepen an integrative research culture, characteristic of the Arts, Education Sciences, and associated knowledge disciplines.
- Contribute to defining research profiles at an advanced level in the field of AE and Artistic Research.
- Define research criteria and thesis formulation in AE and disseminate their products.
- Act as excellent researchers and professionals, contributing to the epistemological and scientific progress of AE and improving the quality of the educational system in this area.
- Integrate into (inter)national research groups and/or networks working on similar research lines and projects.
Organization
- The course is organized into two poles, one at the University of Porto and the other at the University of Lisbon, corresponding to two groups of students, with a functioning that privileges student mobility and the sharing of professors.
