Program Overview

The Doctoral Program in Naval and Oceanic Engineering (PDENO) is integrated into the 3rd cycle of studies contemplated by the Bologna Treaty, complementing the basic training of the 1st and 2nd cycles in Naval and Oceanic Engineering.

The PDENO aims to promote research in Naval and Oceanic Engineering, allowing the development of themes of international scientific interest; provide the development of internationally recognized scientific and technological research activities; and contribute to specialized academic training in Naval and Oceanic Engineering and internationalize the offer.

History

The first Doctorate in Naval Engineering at IST was awarded in 1998. Subsequently, and in order to uniformize the Doctorates according to the rules of the Bologna Treaty, the Doctoral Program in Naval Engineering was created by deliberation of the Coordination Commission of the IST Scientific Council on April 26, 2000. In 2017, the Doctorate was renamed Naval and Oceanic Engineering, in order to reflect the changes in the Bachelor's and Master's degrees.


Objectives

The PDENO aims to promote research in Naval and Oceanic Engineering, allowing the development of themes of international scientific interest; provide the development of internationally recognized scientific and technological research activities; and contribute to specialized academic training in Naval and Oceanic Engineering and internationalize the offer.


Target Audience

The Doctorate is intended for former Bachelor's (5 years) or Master's degree holders in Naval and Oceanic Engineering or related areas who wish to acquire and deepen their scientific knowledge in the topics of this specialty.

Holders of the Doctoral degree in Naval and Oceanic Engineering can exercise their activity primarily in Higher Education Institutions, Research Laboratories, Companies, and Government Agencies and Public Administration.
