Program Overview
The Doctoral Program in Computer Engineering and Informatics (PDEIC) is part of the 3rd cycle of higher education, in accordance with the Bologna Agreement. The PDEIC complements the basic training of the 1st and 2nd cycles (Bachelor's and Master's) in Computer Engineering and Informatics.
History
The Instituto Superior Tťcnico has been offering the Doctoral degree in Computer Engineering and Informatics since 1999.
Objectives
After completing their doctorate, graduates of this program are expected to have acquired the ability to:
- comprehend, in a systematic way, a specific field of study and expand the boundaries of knowledge with their original research, in accordance with the highest standards of quality and integrity
- critically analyze, evaluate, and synthesize new complex ideas
- communicate with their peers, the broader academic community, and society in general about the topics in which they specialize
- promote academic, professional, technological, social, or cultural progress in our knowledge-based society
Target Audience
Students with a BSc or MSc degree in Computer Engineering. Candidates with a BSc degree and candidates from other areas that are not Computer Science or Computer Engineering, if admitted, may have to take propaedeutic curricular units from the following reference list (in addition to the normal graduation requirements):
- Artificial intelligence
- Distributed systems
- Network and system security
- Database systems
- System analysis and modeling
- Computer graphics
- Human-machine interfaces
- Object-oriented programming
- Software engineering
- Algorithm analysis and synthesis
Professional Outcomes
Doctors in Computer Engineering and Informatics can hold positions as professors in higher education, in Portugal and abroad, guide Master's and Doctoral students, work in research laboratories and institutes, or work in industry and services, particularly in companies with research and development departments.
Operational Regime
The operation of the Doctoral Course is determined by the General Regulation of IST Doctorates - 3rd cycle of Higher Education Studies. The training to be acquired during the study cycle leading to the Doctorate in Computer Engineering and Informatics has a curricular component and a research component.
